Marco Zaccaria: The Link Between the Uterine Microbiota and the Development of Uterine Fibroids
Marco Zaccaria, Global Product Manager at H.S. Hospital Service SpA, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper by Heyuan Tang et al. published in the American Journal of Translational Research:
“The link between the uterine microbiota and the development of uterine fibroids is one of the most intriguing frontiers in modern gynecology.
Until a few years ago, the uterus was considered a sterile organ; today we know that it is home to a complex bacterial community that directly affects reproductive health.
Fibroids are benign, estrogen-dependent tumors, and there is a biological link known as the ‘estrobolome’—that is, the set of gut bacteria genes responsible for estrogen metabolism.
In women with fibroids, there is often a reduction in beneficial bacteria (such as Lactobacillus) and an increase in pathogenic or opportunistic bacteria (such as certain species of Firmicutes).
This low-grade local inflammation promotes fibrosis and the growth of the smooth muscle tissue that makes up the fibroid.
Here you’ll find a very recent study on the topic.”
