Fahimeh Ramezani Tehrani, Professor at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, shared on LinkedIn about a paper she co-authored with colleagues published in Health Science Reports:
”New Publication, PCOS, Pre-Pregnancy Weight and Pregnancy Outcomes
I am pleased to share our recent publication in Health Science Reports:
‘How Pre-Pregnancy Weight and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Impact Pregnancy Outcomes: A Population-Based Cohort Study’
Using data from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS), with an average of 23 years of follow-up and 1,105 women, we investigated the impact of pre-pregnancy weight and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) on adverse pregnancy outcomes.
- Our findings highlight that pre-pregnancy overweight and obesity among women with PCOS are associated with a higher risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
- Obesity was associated with an increased risk of GDM in both women with and without PCOS.
- Women with PCOS and obesity also had a higher risk of preeclampsia.
- Importantly, these findings reinforce the value of preconception care and healthy weight management in women with PCOS.
These results emphasize that pregnancy care should not begin only after conception. Optimizing health and weight before pregnancy may represent an important opportunity to reduce pregnancy-related risks among women with PCOS.
I am grateful to all colleagues and collaborators who contributed to this work and to the TLGS team for providing this valuable long-term cohort data.”
