Jaclyn D. Borrowman: How Much of the Black-White Disparity in Hypertension After Pregnancy Is Explained?
Jaclyn D. Borrowman, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Northwestern University – The Feinberg School of Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper she co-authored with colleagues published in AHAIASA Journals:
”New Publication!
About 1 in 10 women with no history of high blood pressure may develop hypertension in the year after giving birth, and research suggests Black women face up to 2.5 times higher risk.
Using data from the CARDIA study, we asked: how much of the Black-White disparity in hypertension after pregnancy is explained by traditional risk factors, reproductive factors, and social drivers of health?
What we found:
- Black women developed hypertension at higher rates and younger ages than White women, and their risk remained higher even after accounting for these factors.
- Together, these factors explained about 25% of the disparity in new hypertension after pregnancy.
Grateful to my coauthors and the CARDIA participants who made this work possible!”
