Mathew Leonardi: How 2D and 3D Ultrasound Assess Bladder Endometriosis
Mathew Leonardi, Associate Professor at McMaster University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Bladder endometriosis on ultrasound, assessed using the IDEA consensus approach.
On 2D ultrasound, bladder disease is seen as a hypoechoic nodule involving the bladder wall. Mucosal involvement is noted with small cystic areas. Releasing some pressure is essential to allow the bladder to distend with urine. With 3D ultrasound, we can reconstruct a view that looks similar to cystoscopy, helping show how the lesion projects toward the bladder lumen.
Ultrasound does not just ‘see’ endometriosis. It helps map disease before surgery. Understanding proximity to the ureter is essential.”
