Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, the New Name for PCOS – PCOS Awareness Association
PCOS Awareness Association shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) is the new name for the condition previously known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) — a condition affecting 1 in 8 women, or more than 170 million worldwide.
This change follows the largest global engagement ever undertaken for a medical name change, informed by over 22,000 survey responses, multiple co‑design workshops with women with lived experience and health professionals, and the involvement of 56 patient organizations and professional societies globally, including PCOS Awareness Association.
For decades, the term PCOS reduced a complex, lifelong hormonal and metabolic condition to a misleading focus on ‘cysts’ and ovaries. This misunderstanding has contributed to missed diagnoses, delayed care, and inadequate treatment.
Women living with the condition were the drivers of change (86% supported). Their advocacy, leadership, and lived experience shaped this outcome. Health professionals strongly supported the new name (76%), recognising that the benefits of change outweigh the risks.
PMOS accurately reflects the true nature of the condition and the breadth of symptoms experienced. This evolution will improve understanding, awareness, diagnosis, and ultimately, outcomes for those affected.
A meaningful step forward — driven by evidence, global collaboration, and lived experience.
We recognize that this change will take time and there is a 3-year transition period where both names will co-exist together. The new name will be embedded into the 2028 International PMOS Guideline.
