Emma Marie Swift: Nearly One-Third of Eligible Women Did Not Recall Aspirin Advice
Emma Marie Swift, Associate Professor at the University of Iceland, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Our recent study published in AOGS Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica explored how well aspirin prevention is being implemented among pregnant women at risk of preeclampsia in Iceland.
Low-dose aspirin is a proven, inexpensive intervention that can reduce the risk of severe and preterm preeclampsia. However, its effectiveness depends on two things: healthcare professionals identifying women who would benefit from aspirin, and women being able to take it consistently.
In a survey of 887 pregnant women, nearly one-third of those who met criteria for aspirin prevention did not recall receiving a recommendation to take aspirin.
The encouraging finding was that, once women received the recommendation, adherence was generally high. Only a small proportion chose not to start treatment, and most women reported taking aspirin regularly.
These findings suggest that the biggest opportunity for improvement may not be patient behaviour, but strengthening systems that ensure every eligible woman is identified and receives clear, consistent advice.
As countries consider implementing more advanced preeclampsia screening programmes, our study highlights an important message: even the most sophisticated screening tools will have limited impact if aspirin recommendations are not consistently delivered.
Sometimes improving outcomes is less about developing new technologies and more about reliably implementing what we already know works.”
