Jennifer Kulp Makarov: What Happens to Your Eggs After an Egg Retrieval?

Jennifer Kulp Makarov, Founder and Reproductive Endocrinologist at Fleura Fertility, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“What happens to your eggs after an egg retrieval?

Once the follicles are aspirated, the embryology team begins a series of carefully timed steps:

  • The follicular fluid is examined under a microscope to find each egg
  • The eggs are identified and collected by the embryologist
  • The surrounding cumulus cells are removed so egg maturity can be assessed
  • A semen sample is prepared, and individual sperm are selected
  • For ICSI, a single sperm is injected directly into each mature egg
  • The eggs are then placed in specialized incubators designed to mimic the conditions inside the body
  • The next morning, the embryology team checks to see which eggs fertilized

This entire process happens behind the scenes in the IVF lab, but it plays a critical role in creating embryos and ultimately helping patients build their families.

Every embryo starts with these first few steps.”
