Free Pelvic Fluid Detection and Quantification Using Transvaginal Ultrasound – RBMO

Reproductive BioMedicine Online (RBMO) shared a post on LinkedIn:

“This pilot study demonstrates that retrograde bleeding is detectable and quantifiable through a simple, non-invasive, ultrasound-based approach.

In this cohort, retrograde bleeding was observed in more than two-thirds of participants, with marked interindividual variability and increasing magnitude across menstrual blood loss categories, suggesting that retrograde menstruation is not uniform in either amount or timing.

Noemi Salmeri and co-authors say that, by showing that retrograde bleeding is measurable, their work establishes an applicable framework to investigate menstrual physiology and its links to endometriosis.

Transvaginal ultrasonography, already a cornerstone of gynecologic imaging, enables direct, reproducible, and volumetric assessment of FPF with minimal invasiveness and high feasibility. Integrating this quantitative approach into routine imaging protocols may bridge the gap between basic pathophysiological concepts and clinical investigation.

Published open access, the paper can be read in full for free ahead of press from our August issue, now.”
