Emergency Contraception: Harder to Access Than It Should Be – BPAS
British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Emergency contraception is a safe, effective and time-sensitive medicine. So why is it still harder to access than it should be?
At BPAS, we are calling for the reclassification of emergency contraception to General Sales List (GSL) status. This simple regulatory change would allow it to be sold in a wider range of retail outlets, including supermarkets, improving access when every hour matters.
This isn’t a new or radical proposal. Countries including Sweden, Norway and the United States already provide off-the-shelf access, and the change is supported by expert groups.
We’re proud to be working alongside the CoSRH – College of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare to make the case for reclassification and remove unnecessary barriers to this safe, time-sensitive medicine.
Improving access to emergency contraception means giving women more opportunities to prevent an unintended pregnancy – and ensuring access reflects the urgency of the medicine.
