Devyanshi Dixit: Can Infertility Change the Brain?

Devyanshi Dixit, Program Manager at CLS Event and Publication, shared on LinkedIn:

“Can Infertility Change the Brain?

Infertility is usually discussed in terms of ovaries, sperm, hormones, and reproductive treatments.

But there is another organ that may be deeply affected by the experience:

The brain.

The uncertainty of infertility treatment, repeated procedures, hormonal changes, waiting periods, and pregnancy outcomes can create prolonged psychological stress.

What Happens in the Brain?

  • Stress pathways

Chronic psychological stress can influence the brain-body stress response, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.

  • Attention and emotional processing

Persistent uncertainty can affect sleep, concentration, mood, and how the brain processes stress and emotions.

  • Brain-hormone connection

The brain and reproductive system communicate continuously through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. Stress and reproductive hormones interact in complex ways.

  • The emotional burden is real

Anxiety, depression, grief, and treatment-related distress are not simply “in the mind”—they can be important components of the infertility experience and deserve clinical attention.

But Can Infertility Literally ‘Change the Brain’?

Research is still evolving.

Infertility itself should not be described as causing permanent brain damage. Rather, stress, emotional distress, sleep disruption, hormonal factors, and the treatment journey may influence brain function and wellbeing.

This is why modern fertility care needs to look beyond conception alone.

Fertility care should support both reproductive health and psychological wellbeing.

At the 12th Global Summit on Gynecology, Fertility and Women’s Health (GFWH 2026), experts will explore emerging developments across infertility, reproductive medicine, IVF, fertility psychology, precision care, and women’s health.

Treating infertility means caring for the whole person – not just the reproductive system.”
