Peta Titter: We Prepare Women for Birth, Not for Who They Are after It…

Peta Titter, Founder and CEO of Women’s Health Education Network, shared on LinkedIn:

“We prepare women for birth. Not for who they are after it.

I study the space between what women are told during pregnancy and what actually happens to them after. Right now, the brief hasn’t changed in decades. Prepare her for the birth. Leave the rest for later.

We spend months preparing women to give birth. Almost nothing prepares them to return to themselves afterward.

Not the same self. A different body, a different mind, and not the same difference twice. Every pregnancy changes both.

The change isn’t the problem. The silence around it is.

Women are told they’ll be fine. Told this is natural and beautiful. It might be both. Neither explains what changed, or why the coping strategies that worked before stop working now.

Women try anyway. Same expectations, same routines, same standard they held before. Set up to fail before they’ve started, then blamed for struggling.

The silence has a cost. Women disengage from care. They stop raising symptoms because they’ve been told this is what having a baby looks like. They carry shame over something no one warned them about.

A Senate inquiry into postpartum healthcare is about to test whether that silence holds up under scrutiny.”
