Devyanshi Dixit: Can Pregnancy Reveal a Woman’s Future Health Risks?

Devyanshi Dixit, Program Manager at CLS Event and Publication and Conference Manager at the 12th Global Summit on Gynecology, shared on LinkedIn:

“Can Pregnancy Reveal a Woman’s Future Health Risks?

Pregnancy is often viewed as a temporary chapter.

But what if it also provides a window into a woman’s long-term health?

Pregnancy places extraordinary demands on the cardiovascular, metabolic, and endocrine systems. Sometimes, those demands reveal risks that may otherwise remain unnoticed.

What Can Pregnancy Tell Us?
  • Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy

Conditions such as preeclampsia and gestational hypertension are associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease later in life.

  • Gestational diabetes

For some women, diabetes during pregnancy can signal an increased future risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiometabolic disease.

  • Metabolic changes

Pregnancy can reveal underlying challenges involving insulin sensitivity, weight, blood pressure, and lipid metabolism.

  • A Window Into Cardiovascular Health

The physiological stress of pregnancy may uncover vulnerabilities that become clinically important years later.

The Bigger Question

Should pregnancy care end when the baby is born?

Perhaps postpartum care should also ask:

‘What did this pregnancy teach us about the mother’s future health?’

A history of pregnancy complications shouldn’t be viewed simply as something in the past. It can become an opportunity for earlier prevention, long-term monitoring, lifestyle support, and personalized healthcare.

Pregnancy may not predict the future – but it can provide important clues about it.

At the 12th Global Summit on Gynecology, Fertility and Women’s Health (GFWH 2026), experts will explore advances in maternal–fetal medicine, preventive women’s healthcare, reproductive health, cardiometabolic health, and personalized care.

Maybe the postpartum visit shouldn’t only ask, ‘How is the baby doing?’

It should also ask, ‘How can we protect the mother’s health for decades to come?’ “
