Vida Shafti: Why Does Women’s Infertility Require a 360° Perspective?

Vida Shafti, Physician at The OB/Gyn and Infertility Center, shared on LinkedIn։

“Beyond Tunnel Vision: Why Does Women’s Infertility Require a 360° Perspective

One of the greatest challenges in fertility care is the temptation to focus on a single diagnosis. We see a low AMH, PCOS, endometriosis, or a uterine abnormality – and sometimes stop looking further. This is tunnel vision.

Successful fertility care demands a 360-degree approach.

Every patient brings a unique combination of biological, metabolic, hormonal, anatomical, genetic, psychological, and lifestyle factors. Fertility is rarely determined by just one variable.

A true 360° evaluation includes:

  • Ovarian reserve and oocyte quality
  • Sperm health – not just semen analysis, but functional assessment when indicated
  • Uterine cavity and endometrial receptivity
  • Tubal and pelvic factors
  • Endocrine and metabolic health
  • Nutrition, sleep, stress, and physical activity
  • Environmental exposures
  • Individualized treatment planning supported by evidence and, increasingly, Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI has the potential to help clinicians recognize complex patterns that may be overlooked when we focus on only one aspect of infertility. It should not replace clinical judgment – it should enhance it by supporting a more comprehensive, patient-centered evaluation.

The future of reproductive medicine is not about treating a diagnosis; it is about understanding the whole patient.

When we replace tunnel vision with a 360° perspective, we move closer to truly personalized fertility care – and ultimately, better outcomes for our patients.”
