Sam Reynolds: Remembering That Your Body Is Yours During the Fertility Journey
Sam Reynolds, Founder of The Fertility Nurture Hub and The Fertility Sanctuary, shared on LinkedIn:
“I think we sometimes underestimate what fertility struggles can do to someone’s relationship with their own body.
For a long time, my body felt like something I was constantly waiting on, and subsequently disappointed with.
- Waiting for it to ovulate.
- Waiting for a period not to arrive.
- Waiting for test results.
- Waiting for treatment.
- Waiting for it to do the one thing I desperately wanted it to do.
And when so much attention is placed on what your body isn’t doing, it can become very easy to forget everything it still can do.
- Walk.
- Dance.
- Swim.
- Stretch.
- Feel strong.
- Feel the breeze on your face and the freedom to move how you want to, not how you feel you should.
Enjoy being ‘in’ your body rather than constantly evaluating it as something separate to you.
This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot while developing the next phase of Move to Thrive, a physical activity project through The Fertility Nurture Hub CIC and Sport England.
Our first programme taught me something important.
Simply providing an exercise class doesn’t necessarily mean women affected by fertility challenges will feel able or want to attend.
So rather than deciding what the next activity should be, I’m asking:
- What would make movement feel good again?
- What gets in the way?
- What would you genuinely enjoy?
- And what would make you feel comfortable enough to try?
I’ve created a short 3-4 minute survey to help shape what comes next.
If you have lived experience of fertility challenges, I’d really value your thoughts.
And if you work in fertility, women’s health, wellbeing, or community support, sharing it with someone who might want their voice heard would mean a lot.
Because perhaps movement during a fertility journey doesn’t need to be about what your body needs to achieve.
Sometimes it can simply be about remembering that your body is yours.
Share your thoughts in the Move to Thrive survey.
Thank you.”
