Did You Know That Even with ICSI, Fertilisation Can Sometimes Fail? – Fertility Plus

Fertility Plus shared on LinkedIn:

“Did you know that even with ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), fertilisation can sometimes fail?

While ICSI places sperm directly inside an egg, the egg still needs a biological signal to activate.

This is largely driven by a protein called PLCζ, which triggers calcium rises in the oocyte. If this process fails, it can be due to various factors like sperm quality, egg maturity, or even lab procedures.

Total fertilisation failure occurs in about 1-3% of ICSI cycles!

But there’s hope – Artificial Oocyte Activation (AOA) can help. By introducing a calcium ionophore after ICSI, we can stimulate the egg and improve fertilisation rates significantly, especially in patients with past fertilisation issues.

However, AOA isn’t a cure-all.

It won’t fix problems like egg ageing or chromosome abnormalities. It’s essential to use it selectively as a rescue treatment rather than a routine add-on.

For those facing repeated fertilisation challenges, AOA might just be the solution you need!”
