“I recently had a tooth removed.
‘It’s just a tooth,’ I told myself.
But when it was gone, I felt an unexpected sense of loss.
It made me think about something we, as reproductive medicine doctors, can sometimes take for granted.
In reproductive medicine, we sometimes recommend removal or ligation of the fallopian tubes in women with hydrosalpinx before embryo transfer, as hydrosalpinx can negatively affect implantation and pregnancy outcomes.
For us, this may be a medically necessary and technically straightforward procedure.
But for a woman, it can carry a very different emotional meaning.
A tube is not simply an anatomical structure.
It can represent fertility, possibility, motherhood, a future pregnancy– or sometimes a painful chapter that needs to end.
We may see millimetres, anatomy, adhesions, and surgical planes.
She may see what that body part means to her.
My experience with a simple tooth extraction reminded me of a simple lesson:
What is routine for the doctor may never be routine for the patient.
Every procedure deserves not only technical precision, but also empathy.
Because sometimes, healing begins with understanding the loss – not just treating the anatomy.”
