Dilpreet Banwait: Within Something as Small as a Blastocyst Is an Incredible Amount of Biological Information

”A blastocyst is only a few hundred micrometres in size. And yet, within something that small is an incredible amount of biological information.

I recently had the opportunity to watch my senior Latika Singh perform an embryo biopsy, and seeing the process up close made me appreciate just how much precision goes into something that can look so simple from the outside.

The embryo is positioned carefully, the laser is controlled with incredible accuracy, and a small number of trophectoderm cells are removed for genetic testing, all while preserving the integrity of the embryo. It’s a highly specialised technique, and watching it happen under the microscope made the scale of that precision even more apparent.

But what stayed with me wasn’t just the technique. It was knowing that those few cells could provide information that may influence what happens next for a patient, helping identify chromosomal or genetic abnormalities and guide embryo selection.

We spend so much of our time looking at embryos through a microscope that it can be easy to focus only on the cells in front of us. But behind every embryo is someone waiting for an answer, and that puts an entirely different weight on the work.

Precision is the technique. Responsibility is what makes it matter.”
