Smita Rana: Why Does Osmolality Matter in Embryo Culture?

Smita Rana, Junior Embryologist at Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, shared on LinkedIn:

”Why does osmolality matter in embryo culture?

In embryo culture, even small changes in the environment can influence development. Osmolality plays an important role in maintaining cellular water balance and embryo stability.

  • Too high – water moves out of the cells – cellular shrinkage and stress.
  • Too low – water moves into the cells – cellular swelling and stress.

This is why maintaining appropriate osmolality, along with proper temperature, pH, gas balance, humidity and prevention of evaporation, is an essential part of a controlled IVF laboratory environment.

Embryo culture is not just about what we see under the microscope – it’s about maintaining the right environment at every step.”
