Stephanie Beall: Letting Go of “Elective” in Single Embryo Transfer

Stephanie Beall, Physician at Shady Grove Fertility and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper she co-authored with colleagues published in Fertility and Sterility:

“Last year we wrote a piece proposing the removal of ‘elective’ in single embryo transfer.

I do believe the time has come. The data support single blastocyst transfer as the standard of care in good prognosis patients.

The goal of fertility treatment is to build families one healthy child at a time.

We know that minimizing the risk of multiple pregnancy is one way of accomplishing this goal.

By continuing to use the term ‘elective’, it creates the misconception that SET is simply a matter of preference rather than an evidence-based and medically justified practice that prioritizes the health and safety of our patients.”
