Khaled Kteily: Reflecting on How Male Fertility Always Feels a Little Like the Forgotten Step-Child
Khaled Kteily, Founder and CEO at Legacy, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Heading home from my 8th ASRM and reflecting on how male fertility always feels a little like the forgotten step-child, even here. Don’t you agree?
We’re very lucky to be in this field, so I say this with love.
We help people start families, plan for their futures, and get through an extraordinarily anxious time in their lives.
And what keeps me optimistic is that things on the sperm side of the equation are changing surprisingly quickly.
- Late last year, the WHO published its first-ever global infertility guideline, with clinical pathways to diagnose male infertility alongside female. After all, males are half the equation.
- ASRM’s recent committee opinion on recurrent pregnancy loss says sperm DNA fragmentation testing may be considered for couples with unexplained recurrent miscarriage. We’ve run almost 10,000 of these tests nationwide with our CLEP-approved test.
- The AUA’s updated vasectomy guideline now calls mail-in testing an acceptable option. Snip, snip.
- And in September, the DOD started reimbursing active-duty service members who freeze sperm, including with Legacy, before hazardous duty or long separations.
We’re playing our part, too.
Over the past 5 years we’ve put almost $500,000 towards grants and research to push the male fertility field forward.
And this ASRM, our CSO Ramy Abou Ghayda presented our research on everything from mail-in transit times to infertility in the military to LGBTQIA+ fertility.
Huge thanks to Abou Ghayda, Alecia Eberhardt-Smith, Stephanie Sabourin, Jennifer O., and the whole Legacy team for an incredible week, and to the 400 of you who survived chanting ‘SPERM’ with us at the ASRM Prom.
And a special welcome to Meryem Pinder, MBA who joined us the week of ASRM and somehow met half the conference.
What other changes on the sperm side would you add? And if we missed you in Baltimore, please drop us a line!
You’ll be in good company.
