Women’s Health Can Sit at the Frontier of Cell Engineering – Artemis Women’s Health Foundation
Artemis Women’s Health Foundation shared on LinkedIn:
”Before Fertilo entered its US Phase 3 trial, we sat down with Dina Turner, CEO and co-founder of Gameto, for an Artemis webinar on novel therapies in women’s health.
On 27 October 2026, Ferring Pharmaceuticals agreed to acquire Gameto in a deal worth up to $1.38bn, one of the largest women’s health transactions of the year. Great news, Dina and the entire Gameto team!
Three things from that conversation are worth revisiting now:
The Unmet Need. IVF has changed remarkably little in decades. Most cycles still depend on around two weeks of hormone injections, and that burden falls almost entirely on women. (02:37)
A Genuinely Novel Approach. Fertilo uses stem cell – derived ovarian support cells to mature eggs outside the body, with the aim of making IVF and egg freezing shorter and less demanding. Women’s health doesn’t have to trail other fields. It can sit at the frontier of cell engineering. (07:38)
Regulatory Strategy. IVF has always been regulated unevenly. Core techniques like ICSI never went through FDA approval, culture media are cleared as devices, and hormone injections are regulated as drugs. Fertilo didn’t fit any of these categories. It works only in the dish, but it contains living cells.
So is it a device, a biologic, or a reagent?
The answer differs by country.
An established reproductive medicine leader is now willing to pay for platform innovation in a field long treated as a backwater.
