“Placental Syncytial Microparticles (PSMPs): Release into Maternal Circulation
Placental Syncytial Microparticles are extracellular vesicles shed from the syncytiotrophoblast layer of the placenta into the maternal bloodstream. These particles (100–1000 nm) carry placental proteins, nucleic acids (DNA/RNA, miRNA), and bioactive molecules that participate in maternal–fetal communication.
Key Highlights for Medical Students:
- Origin: Syncytiotrophoblast apoptosis and membrane blebbing
- Composition: Phospholipid bilayer with placental markers (e.g., CK-7, syncytin, HLA-G)
- Functions: Immune modulation, angiogenesis, metabolic adaptation
- Clinical relevance: Biomarker potential in preeclampsia and placental dysfunction
PSMPs are not merely cellular debris—they are active mediators of maternal–fetal dialogue and reflect overall placental health.”
