Carmen Mair: Brown Spotting Before Your Period Is Not Automatically a Progesterone Problem
Carmen Mair, Fertility Nutritionist, shared on LinkedIn:
“Brown spotting before your period is not automatically a progesterone problem.
Three, four or five days of brown spotting can be frustrating, especially when the immediate advice is often: ‘You probably need more progesterone.’
Maybe. But that skips the more important question:
Why might progesterone be dropping too early in the first place?
Progesterone is produced by the corpus luteum after ovulation. So the story behind your pre-period spotting may have started much earlier in the cycle.
Things worth investigating include:
- Whether you are actually ovulating
- How well the follicle developed before ovulation
- How long your luteal phase actually lasts
- Whether you are eating enough to support reproductive function
- Thyroid and prolactin function
- PCOS, insulin resistance, chronic stress, or perimenopausal changes
And this is why blindly taking Vitex or progesterone cream isn’t always the answer.
Sometimes low progesterone is the problem.
Sometimes it is a clue that something upstream needs attention.
Brown blood itself simply means the blood has taken longer to leave the uterus and has oxidised. The more interesting question is why the uterine lining is beginning to shed before your proper period starts.
Don’t just ask:
‘How do I increase my progesterone?’
Ask:
‘What happened earlier in my cycle that may have affected progesterone production?’
That question can completely change the investigation.
The Fertility Circle teaches you how to look at your cycle as a connected system rather than chasing one hormone at a time.
