Marleen Temmerman: Putting People at the Center of Health System Transformation
Marleen Temmerman, Professor at Ghent University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“At the recently concluded World Health Summit session, ‘Putting People at the Center of Health System Transformation,’ I reminded my audience that health systems must be built around people.
Putting people at the center of health care means designing services around the comprehensive needs, preferences, and values of individuals and communities, not only around diseases or institutional processes.
This reflection closely aligns with the launch of the first collaborative initiative in Africa between the World Health Organization and Aga Khan University’s Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health (CoEWCH), East Africa, focused on breast and cervical cancer.
For women facing breast and cervical cancer, people-centered care means timely screening, clear information, respectful communication, safe care, trusted systems, and support throughout the care journey.
Through this initiative, CoEWCH East Africa will contribute to generating evidence, strengthening capacity, advancing implementation research, and translating knowledge into action to support cancer prevention and care for women across Africa.
Because health systems are strongest when the people they serve are truly at the center.”
