Devyanshi Dixit: Is Age Really the Biggest Factor in Female Fertility?
Devyanshi Dixit, Program Manager at CLS Event and Publication, shared on LinkedIn:
”Is Age Really the Biggest Factor in Female Fertility?
We often hear:
‘Age is the most important factor in fertility.’
But is the story really that simple?
Age is certainly an important factor – but female fertility is influenced by much more than the number of candles on a birthday cake.
What Else Matters?
- Ovarian Reserve
AMH and antral follicle count can provide information about ovarian reserve, although they do not independently predict natural fertility or guarantee IVF success. - Egg Quality
As reproductive age increases, the proportion of eggs with chromosomal abnormalities generally rises, making age an important factor in reproductive potential. - Reproductive Health
Conditions such as endometriosis, PCOS, tubal disease, fibroids, and previous pelvic surgery can influence fertility. - Genetics and Medical History
Individual health conditions and genetic factors can also shape reproductive outcomes. - Lifestyle and Overall Health
Smoking, certain environmental exposures, nutrition, metabolic health, and other factors may influence reproductive health.
Male Factor Matters Too
Fertility is a shared process. Sperm quality and reproductive health can also affect the chance of conception.
So, Is Age the Biggest Factor?
Age matters – but it isn’t the whole story.
There is no single test that can provide a complete ‘fertility score.’
Modern reproductive medicine is increasingly focused on understanding the individual, rather than relying on one number or one biomarker.
Advances in fertility assessment, reproductive endocrinology, ovarian reserve testing, genetics, IVF, fertility preservation, and precision fertility care are helping clinicians build a more complete picture.
These developments will be part of the scientific dialogue at the 12th Global Summit on Gynecology, Fertility and Women’s Health (GFWH 2026).
