Fereshteh Safian: A Case From the IVF Lab On Dysmorphic Oocytes and Embryo Development
Fereshteh Safian, Clinical Embryologist at Pooyesh Fertility Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“In this cycle, we observed a 25-year-old patient with highly dysmorphic oocytes showing pronounced cytoplasmic abnormalities across multiple retrieved oocytes, making the assessment of maturity particularly challenging.
Interestingly, a similar oocyte morphology had been documented in a previous cycle which ultimately resulted in a successful live birth.
In the current cycle, 6 oocytes underwent ICSI, resulting in 5 cleavage-stage embryos. Two embryos were vitrified on day 3, while the remaining three continued developments and reached the early blastocyst stage on day 5, showing persistence of the same morphological pattern, when they were vitrified.
The recurrence of this distinctive oocyte morphology across different cycles suggests a persistent phenotype rather than an isolated observation.
The underlying mechanism remains unclear. Similar observations from other IVF laboratories would be interesting to compare.”
