Huma Sultan: The Placenta – A Temporary Organ with a Huge Job

Huma Sultan, 4-Year Medical Student, shared on LinkedIn:

”The Placenta – A Temporary Organ With A Huge Job

The placenta is a temporary organ that develops during pregnancy. It connects the mother and baby through the umbilical cord and helps:

  • Deliver oxygen and nutrients to the baby
  • Remove waste products
  • Produce hormones that support pregnancy

Interesting fact: The mother’s blood and the baby’s blood normally do not directly mix. The placenta allows exchange between them while keeping the two circulations separate.

Placental variations: Some are simply anatomical variations, while others can have clinical importance – such as succenturiate, circumvallate, velamentous insertion, and placenta accreta spectrum.

One organ. Two circulations. One remarkable connection.”
