Lucy Froese: At 41, I Was Told I Had Left It Too Late…

Lucy Froese, Fertility and IVF Coach, shared on LinkedIn:

“At 41, I was told I had left it too late.

My next IVF cycle became my best one.

And it gave me these two.

IVF had given me Eloise at 37.

Our first cycle had worked, and I think part of me assumed that when we were ready to grow our family, we would simply do IVF again, and it would work first time again.

But it didn’t.

Instead, trying for another baby became far more complicated and overwhelming than I ever could have imagined.

  • Secondary infertility.
  • Pregnancy loss.
  • A failed IVF cycle.

Then discovering that male-factor infertility was also part of our story.

Each setback brought more questions.

More tests.

More difficult decisions.

And more fear that perhaps Eloise would be our only child, not because that was what we wanted, but because we were being told that time was running out.

By the time we were considering a third IVF cycle, I was 41.

And my age seemed to enter every conversation.

I knew age mattered.

I understood the statistics.

But being told I had left it too late didn’t feel like information.

It felt like a verdict.

As though the ending of my story had already been decided for me.

There were moments when I wondered whether I should accept that our family was complete.

Whether wanting another baby was asking for too much.

Whether I was putting myself through more heartache for something that might never happen.

But underneath all that fear, I knew I wasn’t ready to stop.

So, at 41, I began another IVF cycle.

The cycle I had been made to feel might be too late became the best IVF cycle I had ever had.

And then we discovered there wasn’t just one baby.

There were two.

Max and Chloe.

My rainbow twins.

I know not every fertility story ends this way.

But I also know what it feels like to have your age discussed as though it is the only part of your story that matters.

To feel reduced to a number.

To be given statistics when what you’re carrying is years of longing, disappointment and fear.

That experience is a huge part of why I do the work I do today.

Because women deserve clear and realistic information about their fertility.

But they also deserve the emotional support to process that information, understand what they truly want and make decisions based on what they genuinely believe is right for them, not from fear, pressure or somebody else’s opinion.

Max and Chloe are seven now.

The two babies I feared I had left it too late to have.

And the two little people who remind me every day that what felt like the end of my story wasn’t the end at all.”
