Nitiz Murdia: I Used to Think the Hardest Part of IVF Was the Science…

Nitiz Murdia, Director of Embryology Lab at Indira IVF Group, shared on LinkedIn:

“I used to think the hardest part of IVF was the science.

I was only half right.

Recently, I was thinking about a conversation with a couple who had already been through two IVF cycles.

Their reports were detailed. The numbers were clear. But what stayed with me was something the husband said:

‘We understand the numbers. But sometimes we just want someone to understand what this feels like.’

It made me think about how we measure success in IVF.

We measure embryo quality, blastocyst formation, implantation and pregnancy rates.

And rightly so. Science has to remain at the centre of fertility care.

But there is another part of the journey that doesn’t appear on most dashboards.

How long did the patient wait for an explanation?

Did someone answer the same question for the third time without making them feel uncomfortable?

Did the couple feel they were being treated as people, or simply as a treatment cycle?

Working in fertility care at Indira IVF Group, I have come to realise that these are not small things.

IVF is unusual because the clinical journey and the emotional journey happen simultaneously.

A technically excellent treatment can still feel like a lonely experience.

And empathy cannot compensate for poor clinical care.

The real opportunity is to design both together.

As fertility care in India becomes more sophisticated, I believe this will matter even more.

Technology can improve what happens inside the laboratory.

But the experience around the laboratory determines how a patient remembers the journey.

Perhaps success in IVF shouldn’t only be:

‘Did we achieve the outcome?’

It should also be:

‘How did we make the patient feel along the way?”
