Today Marks the Start of Group B Strep Awareness Week – RCOG

Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists | RCOG shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Today marks the start of Group B Strep Awareness Week.

Group B Streptococcus (Group B Strep, Strep B or GBS) is a type of bacteria that naturally lives in the intestines, rectum and vagina of around 20–40% of women in the UK. Most women who carry it have no symptoms and will not know they are carrying it.

For most women who carry GBS, their baby will be born safely and will not develop an infection. However, in rare cases, GBS can cause serious infections in newborn babies, including sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis.

To help women make informed decisions about their care, RCOG guidance recommends that all pregnant women are provided with information about Group B Strep during pregnancy.

Our patient information on Group B Strep has been developed in collaboration with Group B Strep Support (GBSS) and is available in 15 languages.

Click here to access the patient information in different languages.”
