Anushree Nandan: Cutting-Edge Research on PRC1 Proteins and Endometriosis
Anushree Nandan, PHD Scholar at Symbiosis Centre for Stem Cell Research, Symbiosis International University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper published in Reproductive Biology:
“I am delighted to share that the first research article from my PhD work entitled ‘Correlation between Polycomb repressive complex proteins and epithelial–mesenchymal transition-associated genes in endometriotic tissues’ has recently been published in Reproductive Biology journal.
In this study, we explored whether Polycomb repressive complex 1 (PRC1) proteins, known regulators of gene expression often misexpressed in cancers, play a role in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in endometriosis. By comparing paired tissue samples from the same patients, we discovered:
- Higher expression of PRC1: Genes like RING1B and BMI1 were significantly more active in endometriotic lesions than in eutopic tissue.
- EMT correlation: These lesions also showed a sharp increase in mesenchymal markers and a decrease in adhesion markers like E-cadherin, confirming a high migratory potential.
Our findings suggest that PRC1 proteins may be key drivers in the pathogenesis of endometriosis. Understanding these epigenetic ‘switches’ could eventually lead to more targeted treatments that go beyond just managing symptoms.
I would like to express my gratitude towards my mentor, Dr. Prasad Pethe, for his constant support and guidance in my PhD work and for always being an approachable, patient teacher. I also thank Dr. Abhishek Mangeshikar, founder and Director of the Indian Centre for Endometriosis (ICE), for agreeing to collaborate on this project and providing the valuable patient samples. Also thankful to our co-investigators Dr. Vaijayanti Kale and Dr. Anuradha Vaidya ma’am for their valuable insights in this work.
I would also like to acknowledge the financial support provided by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt of India (Grant number: BT/PR43135/MED/97/609/2021) and Symbiosis International (Deemed University) for providing the infrastructure.
Check out the full paper for more details.”
