Asma Khalil: Rare Fetal Tumour Storyline on Coronation Street
Asma Khalil, Professor of Maternal Fetal Medicine at St. George’s Hospital, shared post on LinkedIn:
“In my role as a maternal–fetal medicine specialist, no two days are ever the same and having the opportunity to act as medical advisor on a recent Coronation Street storyline was both fascinating and truly rewarding.
The episode explores the diagnosis of a tumour in an unborn baby and the complex decisions that follow, including the possibility of EXIT surgery. These are rare and challenging situations that require highly specialised care, clear communication, and compassion for families navigating uncertainty.
What makes this particularly powerful is the role that popular television can play. Storylines like this bring complex medical realities into people’s homes, helping to raise awareness, spark conversations, and deepen understanding of conditions many may never have heard of otherwise.
In many ways, it’s a reminder of how life and art often reflect one another — and how storytelling can be a meaningful bridge between medicine and the wider public.
