Melaku Alemu: Adolescents’ and Young Adults’ Preferences for Sexual and Reproductive Health Service Utilization in Ethiopia
Melaku Alemu, PhD Candidate at Curtin University, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper published in Social Science and Medicine:
“New Publication in Social Science and Medicine
Our recent article examines adolescents and young adults’ (AYAs) preferences for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services in Ethiopia using three discrete choice experiments (DCEs) – contraceptive services, abortion care, and sexually transmitted infection (STI) services.
Key findings:
- Similar preferences across SRH services, with heterogeneity among sociodemographics.
- Rural and regional residents preferred privacy, while urban and city residents valued quality.
- SRH uptake could reach 95% in optimal scenarios, but drop to 10 % in worst cases.
- Participants would pay an additional US$54 to avoid low-quality STI service.
The finding highlights the need for context-specific interventions to meet the expectations of AYAs and improve the SRH service uptake rate.
