Femi Oladapo: Postpartum Haemorrhage As One of the Most Urgent Challenges in Maternal Health

Femi Oladapo, Head, Maternal and Perinatal Health Unit at the World Health Organization, shared a post by The Lancet Group on LinkedIn:

“…A three-part summary of knowledge and actions to end preventable deaths and morbidities from postpartum haemorrhage.

And the results of a good collaboration between HRP Research and University of Oxford.

Sincere thanks to The Lancet Group for giving us the platform.”

Quoting The Lancet Group’s post:

“Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is one of the most urgent challenges in maternal health.

Each year, PPH occurs in an estimated 27 million women worldwide and causes an estimated 43,000 maternal deaths. These deaths are often preventable.

A new Series in The Lancet examines the scale of the challenge, the opportunities to prevent PPH before it occurs, and the urgent actions needed to diagnose and treat it when it does.

“The essential knowledge and tools to substantially reduce PPH-related morbidity and mortality now exist; the primary challenge lies in translating this evidence into consistent clinical practice across diverse health-care settings.” – Arri Coomarasamy & colleagues, paper 3.

Strong health systems, sustained investment, and a commitment to equitable, high-quality care are needed to transform PPH outcomes globally and save lives.
