Maternal Sleep Position Behaviour in the Third Trimester of Pregnancy – NPEC

National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre (NPEC) shared a post on LinkedIn:

“We are pleased to share a new publication from our team with colleagues from the Pregnancy Loss Research Group (PLRG) and the The School of Public Health UCC

‘Understanding maternal sleep position behaviour in the third trimester of pregnancy: A national cross-sectional mixed-methods study.’

Published in Women and Birth, the study explored women’s awareness of recommended sleep positions during late pregnancy, their sleep-position behaviours, and the factors that may support or prevent them from following the recommendations.

The findings show that adopting an advised sleep position is influenced by multiple factors. Accurate knowledge, sleep quality, bed-sharing, pregnancy symptoms and women’s reasons for choosing a particular position can all influence behaviour. The study highlights the importance of clear and consistent antenatal information, alongside practical and behaviourally informed support that acknowledges the realities of sleeping during pregnancy.
