Insights on Myomectomy Outcomes Uncovered – The Fibroid Foundation
The Fibroid Foundation shared a post on LinkedIn: about a paper by Shamaila Ibrahim et al. published in Cureus and a paper by Shun Sato et al. published in Scientific Reports:
“Welcome to another Fibroid Friday!
Fibroid Fridays are a collaboration between Mayo Clinic and the Fibroid Foundation in order to bring new and emerging fibroid research to those who need to know about it first – women with fibroids and their doctors.
–A Comparison of Clinical Outcomes Between Laparoscopic and Open Abdominal Myomectomy in Women With Multiple Symptomatic Uterine Fibroids: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
A new meta-analysis compares laparoscopic and open myomectomy for women with multiple symptomatic fibroids. Across 14 studies and nearly 4,000 patients, laparoscopic surgery showed meaningful recovery advantages, with less blood loss, a smaller hemoglobin drop, and shorter hospital stays. It also had slightly higher pregnancy rates.
However, it does typically take longer, and surgeons often remove fewer or smaller fibroids because open surgery allows direct palpation. Overall, minimally invasive surgery offers strong benefits, but open myomectomy may still be the better choice when fibroids are large or numerous.
–Effects of female hormone withdrawal and ulipristal acetate on MED12 mutation positive and negative uterine leiomyomas using a xenograft model
Researchers examined how treatments affect two fibroid subtypes—MED12-mutant and non-mutant—using a xenograft mouse model. After tumors were grown with estrogen and progesterone, the team tested hormone withdrawal and ulipristal acetate (UPA). In both subtypes, removing hormones shrank tumors, and UPA reduced them even further. Smooth muscle cells shrank with withdrawal and disappeared with UPA. Gene pathway analysis showed each subtype regressed through different biological mechanisms, and the study suggests UPA may kill fibroid cells through a mechanism beyond progesterone receptor activity.
–RA vs TFA in Uterine Artery Embolization: Systematic Review Highlights Safety and Efficiency
A new systematic review comparing wrist-based (TRA) vs. groin-based (TFA) access for uterine artery embolization found that TRA may offer meaningful advantages. Across seven studies (710 patients), TRA matched TFA in procedure time, fluoroscopy duration, and overall success, while showing lower radiation exposure in sensitivity analyses and fewer minor access-site complications. Major complications were similar in both groups.
Overall, the evidence supports TRA as a safe, effective, and patient-friendly alternative to the traditional femoral approach, offering women a more comfortable and potentially safer option for UAE.
