Christopher Robinson: Essential Anatomical Knowledge for Safe and Effective Cesarean Delivery
Christopher Robinson, Associate Professor Maternal Fetal Medicine at University of South Carolina, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“AJOG Expert Review in Cesarean: Essential anatomical knowledge for performing routine and complex cesarean delivery – Anatomical layers of the anterior abdominal wall in the lower midline region
The image demonstrates a transverse section through the lower anterior abdominal wall, highlighting the sequential arrangement of anatomical layers from superficial to deep. The structures illustrated include skin, Camper’s fascia, abdominal muscles, transversalis fascia, preperitoneal fat, and parietal peritoneum. The rectus abdominis muscles are shown medially, enclosed within the rectus sheath, and converge at the linea alba, the fibrous midline structure formed by the interlacing aponeuroses of the abdominal muscles. A magnified inset focuses on fascial planes, demonstrating the distinction between Camper’s and Scarpa’s fascia. This anatomical clarity is particularly relevant in surgical procedures such as lower abdominal incisions, hernia repairs, and catheter placements, where accurate identification of layers is essential.”
