Kate Staatsen: Exploring Chronic Histiocytic Intervillositis in a 25-Year Retrospective Study

Kate Staatsen, Directed Lab Student at EMbody Lab, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“This summer, I had the privilege of working as a summer student in the Kingdom Lab at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute. My project focused on a retrospective study of chronic histiocytic intervillositis (CHI) pregnancies spanning the last 25 years.

I conducted chart reviews and statistical analyses using Sinai Health databases to investigate characteristics such as prevalence, comorbidities, demographics, PlGF levels, and uterine and umbilical artery doppler findings. This study is especially exciting as it represents one of the first CHI cohorts of this size with access to PlGF testing, offering the potential for novel insights into this rare placental disorder.

This experience strengthened my passion for obstetrics, a field I aspire to pursue, and provided invaluable training in both research and clinical medicine. To top it all off, I was able to observe my first C-section, which was an unforgettable moment that further inspired my interest in women’s health.

I am very grateful to everyone in the Kingdom Lab for their mentorship and support throughout this incredible learning opportunity. I look forward to sharing our findings in an upcoming paper!”
