Karen Cheng: Azathioprine and Intrahepatic Cholestasis in Pregnancy
Karen Cheng ,Global Medical Lead, Immunology at Sobi – Swedish Orphan Biovitrum AB, shared Lupus Foundation of America’s post on LinkedIn about a paper by Reem Farhat et al. published in Arthritis and Rheumatology:
“Emerging data in rheumatology pregnancy research – A recent SLE study found an association between azathioprine exposure and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP)
While this has not yet been specifically studied in depth in myositis pregnancies, the findings raise important questions for the broader autoimmune disease community – given the overlap in immunosuppressive therapies across lupus, dermatomyositis, antisynthetase syndrome, and other inflammatory myopathies.
As more women with autoimmune diseases pursue pregnancy safely, understanding medication-specific maternal and fetal risks becomes increasingly important.
Is this an area worth watching closely for future myositis research and multidisciplinary monitoring strategies. What do you think Laura Andreoli?
Hannah Maher, any interest to look into this?”
Quoting Lupus Foundation of America’s post:
“New study finds connection between azathioprine exposure in women with lupus and a liver condition called intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, that can occur late in pregnancy. Read the study in the latest Inside Lupus Research.”
