“Why Are Sperm Morphology and DNA Integrity Important?
When discussing male fertility, sperm count often gets the most attention—but count alone doesn’t tell the whole story.
Two equally important factors are sperm morphology (shape) and DNA integrity.
Sperm Morphology
Morphology assesses the size and shape of sperm. Normally shaped sperm are more likely to swim efficiently, bind to the egg, and support normal fertilization. Abnormal morphology may reduce the chances of natural conception and can be associated with lower fertilization rates.
Sperm DNA Integrity
Even if a sperm appears normal under the microscope, its DNA may be damaged. Elevated sperm DNA fragmentation has been associated with:
• Reduced fertilization potential
• Poor embryo development
• Lower implantation rates
• Increased risk of miscarriage in some couples
Many factors can affect sperm DNA quality, including oxidative stress, smoking, infections, varicocele, age, and certain lifestyle or environmental exposures.
A comprehensive male fertility evaluation goes beyond sperm count. Assessing morphology and, where clinically appropriate, DNA integrity provides a more complete picture of reproductive potential and can help guide personalized fertility treatment.
Healthy sperm are defined not just by their numbers—but by their structure and genetic integrity.”
