Tazeen Farhan: Are IVF Babies Different from Naturally Conceived Babies?

Tazeen Farhan, Reproductive and IVF Consultant at Genova IVF Fertility Center, shared on LinkedIn:

” ‘Doctor, tell me honestly… are IVF babies different from naturally conceived babies?’

A patient once asked me this question, and behind those few words, I could hear so many unspoken worries.

  • Will my baby be healthy?
  • Will my baby develop normally?
  • Will my child be just like any other child?

And I wish every couple on their fertility journey could hear this answer.

Let me tell you a little story…

Imagine two babies being held in their mothers’ arms. One was conceived naturally, and the other through IVF.

One journey began with a spontaneous conception. The other began with hope, medical science, injections, appointments, waiting, and perhaps years of prayers.

But when these two babies open their eyes, wrap their tiny fingers around their parents’ hands, and smile for the first time, do they carry a label telling the world how they were conceived?

No. They are both precious little human beings, deserving of the same love, care, and opportunities.

Here is the science behind the story.

IVF changes how conception happens; it does not automatically determine who a child will become.

Most children conceived through IVF grow and develop normally.

However, research has identified some increased risks of certain pregnancy and birth complications in IVF pregnancies. Some of these risks are influenced by parental factors, the underlying cause of infertility, multiple pregnancy, and the fertility treatment itself.

That is why individualised care, appropriate embryo-transfer decisions, and good antenatal follow-up matter.

So, are IVF babies different?

Their journey to conception may be different. Their individual health and development can vary, just as they do among naturally conceived children. But being conceived through IVF does not mean a child is destined to be less healthy, less capable, or less loved.

And to every couple waiting for their miracle, remember this:

IVF is not a guarantee, but it is a possibility. And a different beginning does not make a child any less extraordinary.

As a Fertility and IVF Consultant, one of the most beautiful parts of my work is helping couples understand the science, overcome fear, and make informed decisions with hope.
