Hamide Barzegar: Exploring Maternal Substance Use Impact on Neonates
Hamide Barzegar, Neonatologist at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper published in BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth:
“Our new article has just been published in BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth:
‘Maternal substance use disorder and neonatal health: epidemiologic and socioeconomic determinants in a case-control study, Shiraz, Iran.’
In this case-control study, we explored how maternal substance use disorder and socioeconomic factors influence neonatal outcomes, including the length of hospital stay, need for treatment, Finnegan score, and discharge disposition.
One of the key findings was that socioeconomic and maternal educational status strongly affected neonatal health outcomes and discharge plans, highlighting the need for multidimensional care and social support for this vulnerable population.
Methadone was the most common substance used.
40% of infants were transferred to social services.
Higher maternal education was linked to longer hospitalization.
Socioeconomic factors played a significant role in outcomes.
I’d love to hear from you:
What has been your experience with neonatal abstinence syndrome or caring for infants born to mothers with substance use disorder?
Have you observed similar socioeconomic influences in your practice or research?”
