Dorit Kieslinger: Time-Lapse Imaging Does Not Improve Live Birth Rates

Dorit Kieslinger, Clinical Embryologist at Amsterdam UMC, shared a post on LinkedIn about a paper she co-authored with colleagues published in Human Reproduction:

“Innovative technology doesn’t necessarily mean better outcomes.

Time-lapse incubators are increasingly used in IVF laboratories worldwide.

But does this technology actually improve patients’ chances of having a baby?

Our newly published individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis, combining data from 5642 patients across eight randomized controlled trials, provides high-certainty evidence that time-lapse imaging does not improve live birth rates compared with standard embryo culture and selection.

The findings are consistent across different laboratory strategies, including day of transfer.

Of course, the use of time-lapse incubators may offer other advantages for IVF laboratories.

But in a time of rising healthcare costs, how should we weigh potential laboratory benefits against the additional expenses of this technology?”
