“The science is ctching up to what many women already feel: When the vaginal microbiome is off, everything is affected!
A fascinating new Danish collaborative research by Axel Skafte-Holm and Jørgen Skov Jensen at Statens Serum Institut tracked nearly 2,000 pregnant women and the findings really resonated with my initial understanding of the vaginal microbiome and it’s far-reaching impact on women’s health, including pregnancy:
Lactobacillus crispatus rich vaginal microbiome was more associated with healthy pregnancies
Ureaplasma spp and Mycoplasma hominis were not associated with loss, an important nuance!
Vaginal dysbiosis, i.e. a mixed and diverse vaginal microbiome was significantly associated with pregnancy loss
What stood out most?
- It’s the overall stability and balance of the microbiome that matters the most.
- A stable microbiome sets the trajectory for what happens next.
