Swapna Nhavi: Revolutionizing Ovarian Tissue Preservation
Swapna Nhavi, Embryologist, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Nanowarming of ovarian tissue
- Nano-warming in ovarian tissue cryopreservation is an advanced warming technique used after vitrification. It involves dispersing biocompatible magnetic nanoparticles within the cryopreserved tissue.
- When exposed to an alternating magnetic field, these nanoparticles generate uniform heat from inside the tissue, enabling rapid and even warming.
- Nano-warming is used to prevent ice recrystallization, a major cause of tissue damage during conventional warming.
- Compared to normal warming methods, it offers better temperature control, reduced thermal gradients, improved tissue viability, and enhanced preservation of follicular structure—making it a promising innovation in fertility preservation.
- Ovarian tissue warmed using nano-warming had less oxidative stress (less cell damage) and important fertility-related genes (BMP15, GDF9, FSHR) remained stable after culture.
- Nano-warming helps protect ovarian tissue from cryoinjury and may improve tissue survival after freezing and warming.
Done in case of
- Patients undergoing cancer treatment or at risk of premature ovarian failure.
- Research or regenerative medicine applications.”
