Alexandra Korolenko: Excited to Share New Research on Transgenerational Epigenetic Inheritance

Alexandra Korolenko, Postdoctoral Researcher at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I’m excited to share that my first research paper from graduate school is officially in press!

This study investigates the generational stability of epigenetic inheritance following ancestral exposure to the fungicide vinclozolin, a well-known anti-androgenic toxicant. Using a rat model, we examined descendants from the F3 through F13 generations to test whether vinclozolin-induced epigenetic changes persist across ten generations.

Our findings show that ancestrally exposed, transgenerational generations exhibit a higher incidence of adult-onset diseases. Including infertility, obesity, kidney disease, ovarian cysts, and prostate disease. Compared to the directly exposed generations. These results support the hypothesis that environmental toxicants can induce stable DNA methylation changes (epimutations) in the germline that are inherited long after the original exposure.

By demonstrating long-term persistence of these epigenetic alterations, this work advances our understanding of how environmental exposures shape health across generations and highlights the potential of epigenetic biomarkers for predicting disease susceptibility.
Grateful for the mentors, collaborators, and lab mates who made this work possible, and excited for what’s next.”
