Does Infertility or Its Treatment Increase the Risk of Congenital Anomalies – Fertility Plus

“Does infertility or infertility treatment increase the risk of abnormal babies
Did you know that infertility and assisted reproductive technologies like IVF and ICSI can slightly increase the risk of congenital anomalies compared to natural conception? A recent review of 143 studies indicates that while the absolute risk rises from about 3-5% to roughly 4-6%, many factors contribute to this. Parental factors – such as age, BMI, and the cause and duration of infertility – play a significant role. Additionally, multiple embryo transfers and pregnancies can also impact risk levels.
However, advancements in ART techniques – like single embryo transfer, blastocyst culture, frozen embryo transfer, and preimplantation genetic testing – have shown promise in mitigating these risks when protocols are carefully optimized. It’s essential to stay informed and consult with healthcare providers about the safest options for building your family!
