“Happy Monday!! It’s women’s checkup day!!

It only seems fitting that we offer a great reminder to every woman behind Mother’s Day….of the importance of having your annual female exam and mammogram.
Over the years, I have learned that there are many people afraid of both doctors and hospitals….sadly. The key to this post is to remind you that ‘knowing’ is half the battle. In other words…..being proactive, having your annual check ups and learning what is going on with your body, is the key to living a long and healthy life!
Historically, it took a long time before womens’ health issues were truly addressed by the medical community in a logical and scientific manner. While there were female healters as early as 3000 BC, it wasn’t until the 1980’s that we saw a true revolution in how we approach women’s health issues as whole. In 2015, The Women’s Health Organization identified the following Top 10 health concerns:
Heart disease:
Causing 1 in 3 deaths…..it is the number one killer…..with rather subtle symptoms, such as nausea, dizziness, or jaw pain, not just chest pain.
Breast and cervical cancer:
1 in 8 women….will experience breast cancer during their lifetiime! Making regular mammograms and HPV/Pap tests a critical part of early detection.
Reproductive health and fertility:
Major concerns include endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and infertility, which may significantly impact quality of life.
Mental health:
Statistically, women are more likely to experience depression, anxiety disorders, and eating disorders as compared to men. This is often influenced by their hormonal fluctuations.
Autoimmune diseases:
Roughly 75% of people diagnosed with autoimmune diseases, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or thyroid issues, are women.
Osteoporosis:
As we age, we are at higher risk of brittle bones, especially post-menopause. In fact, 80% of the 10.2 million Americans with osteoporosis are women.
Stroke:
Surprisingly, more women than men…. are at high risk of having a stroke. Their increased risks come from pregnancy due to preclampsia.
Pelvic floor disorders
Affecting 1 in 3 women as we age, conditions like urinary incontinence (leakage) or pelvic organ prolapse may occur
Sexual and reproductie health:
This includes STI prevention, contraception, and the impacts of sexual violence.
Menopause and premenopause:
Hormonal changes occur during the transition before and during menopause, which may cause hot flashes, sleep issues, and vaginal dryness.
As with all things…..knowledge is power. Empowering yourself is the key….make the time to get your annual exams. Note, there are resources for women without medical insurance:
- Thrive Alabama offers a sliding fee scale based on income.
- Community Free Clinic of Huntsville
- Happi Health, offering affordable options.
Have a great day and schedule your checkups asap!!”
